The Self Improvement Mandate - Act Two
Self Improvement Mandate - Act Two
Welcome back to the self improvement mandate with the second in the series. This is all about getting off your butt and taking action, don’t just read these posts and do nothing with them - I mean what’s the point of that? You might as well spend your time with the rest of the drifters and watch the box for hours on end and then of course complain that you are not successful. The self improvement mandate will give you a fast track to self improvement and success - but only if you do what I tell you! So get your finger out of wherever it happens to be and listen up……….
I have said this many times and I will say it again - there are three steps to success and they are very simple to understand:
- Decide what you want
- Plan how you will get it
- Do it!
Now I probably sound like a real smartass with this but I can tell you that all of my successful endeavours in the past have been built around these three simple principles. The most important of these is the first one - deciding what you want. It is without doubt the biggest reason why people do not succeed and struggle with self improvement. If you ask the average person what they want from life they will probably umm and ahh and tell you that they don’t really know. Most don’t even have any short term goals. There are of course those that go through the charade each year of making New Year’s resolutions. Then they get completely obliterated on New Year’s Eve and forget all about them!
I have asked many people why they don’t know what they want and the answers range from “I never thought about it” to “it’s just too difficult to decide”
These are real answers I have received. Do they strike a cord with you? If they do don’t panic. I am going to show you how to decide what you want, even if it is only in the short term.
The most important thing when making life changing decisions is to be specific. It is as useless as tits on a canary to come up with something like “I want more money” or “I want to lose weight”. These are far too general and will get you nowhere. If you want more money than be specific about how much and by when. The same goes for losing weight, learning to play the violin, succeeding with public speaking, meeting your ideal partner - yes you can be specific with this in terms of your requirements for a partner and when you want to find one by. “Whoa Sledge you have got to be kidding me!” No I am not I am really serious. If you put a deadline on something it is far more likely to happen than if you don’t. If you still want to be looking for that perfect partner when your 82 then don’t bother with deadlines!
Now I want to give you some inspiration to help you to decide what you want. That’s what the self improvement mandate is all about - providing you with the knowledge and the push that you need to succeed in life. So what you need to do is ask yourself some questions to find out what you want. Here goes then:
- Do I need to improve my financial situation?
- Do I need to improve my health?
- Is there a skill that I want to master?
- Do I need some new friends?
- Do I need to improve my love life?
- Do I want to travel somewhere?
- Is there something new that I really want to own?
Now I have given you a starting point here. You can add questions from other areas of your life if you wish. Don’t just answer these questions with “Yes”. If you have decided that you need to improve your financial situation then ask yourself a further question like “how do I want to improve my financial situation?” This should provide you with answers like “start my own business” or “get a better job” or “rob a bank” etc. Then you need to chose your preferred option (I wouldn’t chose rob a bank as it is a tad risky). Then this becomes one of your key goals that you need to make specific e.g. “I will get a job that pays $75,000 a year by 30 April 2008″ Now don’t worry how you are going to achieve this at this point - the important thing is that you have a goal that you really want to achieve.
On a final note, don’t end up with 37 goals that you want to achieve this year. This is utter bullshit and you will never achieve them all if any. I would recommend a maximum of three, non conflicting goals. Maybe one on finance, one on health and one on skills. If you decide on only one that’s fine.
In Your Self Miracle I give you a tons of examples that will generate ideas for you by the bucket load and a really powerful technique to ensure that you stick to your goals. Check it out here.
So that concludes the self improvement mandate act two. Now you know what I am going to say don’t you………….. go and f@#king do it.
