Read This If You Hate Mondays

Picture the scene – its 8.30pm on Sunday and your anxiety levels are reaching fever pitch. You are trying to concentrate on your spouse and kids or something else that you are supposed to do to be that upstanding citizen that your dad told you about.

But you can’t concentrate on anything. Your mind is now saturated with the thought of getting up early and commuting with the great and the unwashed tomorrow morning to embark on another week of drudgery and bullshit.

Does this sound familiar? Of course it does! Recently I conducted a test where I asked a number of people to record their instantaneous reactions to the phrase “Monday morning”. Here are my favorites:

“Oh F@#k!”
“Only five days until the weekend”
“The weekend went by so quickly”
“I can’t believe its f@#king Monday again”
“There has got to be an easier way than this”
“Oh my god I have to go to that weekly meeting with that asshole Ross”
“Another week of crap beckons”
“What’s the point of all this?”
“I want to throw up!”
“I want to be in a room alone with the guy that invented the rat race!”
“It’s like picking cigarette buts out of the urinal!”
“Jeez what a bitch”
“I wonder if Bill Gates feels like this?”
“I don’t want to think about it”
“Oh well back to the grind with all the other f@#king losers!”
“Stress city”
“I just want to die”
“Oh well only 23 years and 163 days until my retirement!”
“I want to be on a beach in the sun”
“It’s all b@llocks”

Truth is not one of the responses was positive which I don’t suppose for one minute surprises you. At this point you are probably thinking “Jeez Sledge, why are you telling me this?”

Well my friend I am telling you this because I passionately believe that hating Mondays is your surest ticket into loser city. The guy at the city gate will just ask you “Do you hate Mondays my friend?” When you answer “Yes” he will respond with “Welcome to Loserdom”.

Think about it for a moment. There are hopefully going to be many Mondays in your life. So many people are just living for the weekend – what is that all about? If you are a Monday hater it is probably because you don’t have any f@#king idea where your life is going. You are becoming one of my famously termed “drifters”. Changing the way you feel about Mondays is just one of the best ways you can fill your life with passion and expectation. This isn’t some theoretical crap I am laying on you here – it’s a simple step that you can take to make your life more fulfilling and enjoyable.

Let’s analyze this a bit more. The reason that most people hate Mondays is because of what it conjures up in their minds. Probably something along the lines of “commuting to the world’s most boring occupation where you are surrounded by assholes”. Well I have news for you pal – you can easily change that situation. Here it comes again – Sledge’s favorite cliché – “You are what you think” No apologies for citing this again because it’s as true as that pimple on your butt.

So here’s what to do. Commit to yourself to changing your current situation. This could be getting a better job, starting your own business, moving to another department, learning new skills etc. The choice is yours. Or simply you could just change the way you think about Mondays by being grateful that you have a job to go to that keeps you in food, warmth, out of the gutter and so on. Treat each day (not just Monday) as a new opportunity for you to move forward in the direction that you want to go in.

Put some passion into your life and make it a success now. It’s so easy to do. Don’t let the gatekeeper of Loserdom offer you the keys to the city. Learn to love Mondays.

Until next time ;-)
