The Secret About The Secret
The Secret About The Secret
![]()
Have you seen “The Secret?” Everybody has been talking about this movie since its launch last year. I see it on forums, other blogs and countless other places. After some persuasion, I will now give you my view on this movie. Better stop reading if you scare easily
What Is The Secret?
For those of you that don’t know what the f@ck I am droning on about, “The Secret” is a movie that extols the virtues of the Law of Attraction. Now you know that I am a fan of the law of attraction but I don’t see things quite as plain and simply as “The Secret” does.
If you haven’t seen “The Secret” you can see the first 20 minutes of it on YouTube by going here:

The Secret basically states that we are all bundles of energy floating around in the universe and that there are life laws that if obeyed will give you the life of your dreams. They are essentially referring to the law of attraction. They go on further to say that most of the high and mighty of the past knew The Secret - Shakespeare, Lincoln, Edison, Einstein, Churchill, Sledge…………………….. For the rest of the great and the unwashed, The Secret was deliberately locked away so that they would lead a totally meaningless, dull, crap existence as a result. I don’t know about The Secret being locked away but if you tread the normal boards of life and listen to most people then humdrumness (I just invented a new word!) will always be your reward. In my opinion there was no need to lock it away!
Anyway, to apply “The Secret” the movie tells you that you just need to apply the following process:
Ask
Believe
Receive
Basically, you need to decide what it is you want, then believe that you already have it and then when it turns up be grateful that you received it. Hmmmm. This is too much “blind faith” for me. All of the things that I have achieved in my life have come from a similar process but I never just waited for them to appear. I believe that you have to take this a step further.
Yes for sure whatever you think about with emotion will determine how your life will pan out. The example in The Secret given by Jack Canfield, author of “Chicken Soup For The Soul” is much more plausible. He said that he wished for $100,000 and attached very strong emotion to this. He was in the shower a few days later and this great idea came to him. He wrote the book and manifested the money. This is the great power of the subconscious mind. I have had experiences like this on many occasions and by acting upon these ideas has brought me tremendous success.
I am not going to knock the movie, as anything that promotes positive thinking is good in my book. But I will say that the concept of wanting something strongly and then sitting on your spotty butt until it arrives raises some real concerns for me. Acting on ideas from your subconscious when you want something - now that’s worth its weight in gold
See ya

The Secret is the latest and by far the worst example of a HIGHLY profitable trend where self-help gurus with fabricated new age titles and little relevant education, credentials or legitimate expertise brainwash us into believing that they know what is best for us, our marriages and our families.
Often their only contribution to society is introducing some exotic sounding, new age philosophy. However, they often cleverly form an incestuous group of like-minded “experts” who cross-promote each other by swearing their success is due to following the beliefs of another member of their “cult!” All the while, they ply the airwaves jockeying for an ever-larger audience by appearing in the national media to garner third-party endorsements.
The Self-Help Movement has become the Self-Destruct Movement by diminishing or destroying our critical thinking skills to choose and evolve on our own. We have given up the freedom to build healthy lives, marriages and families based on our unique history and life experience. Instead many victims, blinded to the value of their own life experiences, are attracted to the latest secret in self-help, in an attempt to find out what they should think, feel and how they should act… this is the definition of a cult.
The solution is a return to our (common) senses! The best way out of this learned “self-helplessness” is to go cold turkey. Stop following ALL self-help gurus now. Begin, instead, to reclaim your natural, God-given ability to think for yourself. The common sense that was once readily available to all of us is still there free of charge and waiting to be applied to just about any challenge we might face in life… all you have to do is use it.
Please, let’s all work together to stop the flock of “sheepeople” who blindly move from one UNPROVEN concept to the next, looking for the answers to life’s challenges that you already possess and that is the OBVIOUS!
John,
Thanks for your comment.
The reason for The Secret’s popularity is undoubtedly the dream it is selling of doing next to nothing to attract what you want.
This is not something that I subscribe to in any way. All of my success has come through taking consistent action (often long and arduous work) to achieve things that I wanted in life. There were times where I hardly saw my family but through the drive that I had to achieve a desire I was aiming for I pushed on regardless.
People that know me are aware that my success formula is all based around taking specific action. I do not believe in instant cures, or any of the “become a millionaire overnight” crap that plagues the Internet but I DO believe that anybody can change their situation. They just have to want to do this badly enough. It’s a lot more than just dreaming and wishful thinking.
